I'm not saying he isn't a nice guy, I don't know, I've never met him. The article itself really does make him sound like a wanker by bigging up the small things he has done. Blum's is worse though. As far as I can gather he really hasn't done anything but write some fanfiction and do some home movies. What I'm getting at is these people are using other peoples characters and universe, if they wrote something original or were making low budget original films then I can see why they would deserve a place in wikipedia. But when your whole career seems to be trading off being an uber fan of something you didn't create, then it's pretty laughable.
Be fair, I'm not having a go at any of you. If some guy writes something dickish, well then you're in your rights to have a go.
Topping was a civil servant (like me). As far as I know he was able to leave that and make his living writing about stuff he likes (well unless something has changed in the last couple of years). Fair dues to the man. Sometimes it's not fun being a civil servant (my job might be the exception though). Not much scope for creativity there. Now if I was him, I wouldn't bother with a Wiki, but perhaps he think it'll lead to some work?
As for Jon Blum, I'm quibble with describing his BBC books as fan fic (although I think the missus is the better writer, for what it's worth), any more than New Who is fan fic. I will give him the credit (and I know Ajd would back me up on this) that he will always at least back up his argument (even if it's ludicrous and a little delusional) and isn't as snide compared to some. He will always have been the goon who did the appalling Sylvester McCoy impersonation with a fan vid. He'll have to carry that for the rest of his days. I wouldn't want that on my shoulders.
