I have never seen UFO. The only other show to portray flawed heroes who fail and die, that I know of, is Cowboy Bebop.
Blake and Cally are my favorite characters and that makes both Rescue and Blake difficult to watch at times. I have never like the 4th season as much as the other three and the lack of either Blake or Cally is the reason.

Ultimately Avon is wrong and his ongoing cynicism and lack of trust led him to kill the man he thought he could trust. Blake's 7 starts with a massacre and ends with one, both facilitated by Federation agents, who are not identified as such until its too late. So maybe Blake was wrong too.

Or maybe Cally sums it all up "He who trusts cannot be betrayed, only mistaken" To me that line, spoken twice, once by Cally and then again by Avon, sum up Blake's 7.

But then I am wrong too, probably.

That's a shame, Tone. I think Avon is a great character because he's played so brilliantly by Paul Darrow from the very beginning.
But the episode that shows his character best is Rumours of Death from season 3, IMO. You might want to give that one a re-watch, if you get the chance. The Anorak's Guide to Blakes 7 will tell you why better than I can.

The review of Rumours of Death is very interesting. I often find Boucher's scripts consist of too many scenes of the Liberator crew discussing where they are going and finally getting somewhere with about 15 mins to go and then the whole plot happens in that last stretch...but Rumours of Death sounds great. I know I've seen it, but it was a long time ago. I was too young to fully appreciate it, I suppose, probably like the Rak himself...although I was a little older than 10!

I watched it on the edge of my seat, every ep without fail from the first to the last ep on original broadcast and it became my fave show, above Dr.Who at its peak of excitement when seasons 2 and 3 were on. I was crushed and devastated and shell-shocked into disbelief as a 15 year old when they showed the last ever ep...it was astonishing to me!

But whenever I've tried to rewatch, I've always ultimately felt let down. I think it was the whole 4 season "wild ride" that made it work and unless you watch the whole thing like that, I think it always leaves you feeling unsatisfied. Maybe it was like the X-Files with the ongoing alien conspiracy thing...you're waiting and waiting for a big ending...at least with Blakes 7 we got it, although it was probably not the one we wanted.

It's hard to love, now, but I do hold a respect for it. For a show with a budget of diddly-squat, it achieved a lot.

Gan was definitely my least favourite character. Anyone who suggests that it should be Servalan, is insane. Really! :tearing

Thank you. I am insane and Servalan is the worst character, especially when you consider the whole Sleer plotline.
