POLL: Robert Holmes' best script?

Postby Lance on Sat May 30, 2009 11:04 pm

As the stone tablets brought down from Mount Sinai tell us:

Anorak wrote:Robert Holmes is something of a legend in Doctor Who circles, where he’s generally acknowledged as its finest, and most prolific, writer. Sadly, however, his work on Blake’s 7 was never quite as exceptional.

But which one was the best? :think

I voted for Gambit, as its probably the most "fun" of the four (though its a bit contrieved in its attempts to rope all the regulars into the plot).

I read that quote and my first thought was "what a load of crap, who wrote that rubbish?" :DDDD

The guy only had four chances to get it right, and he wrote what many regard as a classic (Gambit)

For me it's Orbit by some way.

Orbit, definitely. The Vila/Avon scenes are Holmes at his twisted best.

I like both Orbit and Gambit, but I went with Gambit as its great fun and is about stealing.

Orbit for me, by some considerable margin. Although the Tachyon Funnel, it has to be said, is one of the crappest props of all time! In purely script terms, it's superb and small cast are exellent and carry off the ep very effectively. Always liked how Egrorian tells Avon about how Pinder was aged by the techyons and then suddenly says, in this sort of whisper, "Sad, isn't it?"

It looks like something just slapped together in the lab so it works with no attempt at aesthetics, in fact just how it should look.

So what's wrong with the prop, bitch.

Since you asked...it's a TV monitor in one of those frames with wheels we used to use in High School whenever the teacher wanted to show the class a film...with a couple of springs stuck on top and a pair of reel to reel tapes on a box shoved into the slot where the VCR's supposed to go...basically!
