I really don't want to rag on someone else's show. I have tried think in terms of art when it comes to TV and some shows - like the Prisoner may come to mind, but ultimately it seems to me a question of taste. I guess I wish more fans of these shows would realize that and not be so serious about entertainment.

Funny thing about 2001: I did not realize that Bran Foster, before he was killed in The Way Back, had helped Heywood Floyd uncover the monolith on the moon. :Hmm No wonder he could not see that Dev Tarrant was a traitor. The aliens must have read his mind and decided that man was not worth helping. Thats the only way I can explain Servalan's statement in Terminal.

erm, you do know that Blake wasn't actually a kiddie fiddler? It was a fake charge, if Gan had been convicted of such a crime (which he wasn't) that logic would imply that that would also be a fake charge.

Yes, I didn't really get across what I meant..... What I meant was that if Uncle Tel was prepared to have his lead character convicted of being a kiddie fiddler (even though he wasn't a kiddie fiddler) it would come as no surprise that he would have another character who was a woman beater or rapist as he's already mentioned something abhorrent and fairly taboo for an early teen audience in the late 70s.

I reckon I read the fan idea that Gan was a woman beater or rapist and then just presumed I'd seen it in the first few episodes. A bit like Uvanov saying 'Satisfied' in Robots of Death. He only says it in the Target, not the TV show.

I read somewhere (Liberation?) that Blake was a teacher in early drafts of the script . That adds another level of :ugh

Did they use that angle in those recent audios?

I don't think they did, I can't remember tbh. I've blotted them out of my mind.

Yeah, they're gone from my mind too, mainly due to them being bland and completely unmemorable.

I kind of like the implication that Gan's only a nice guy because the limiter makes him so. And it's consistent with the more gritty ideas presented in season 1. I bet Terry Nation saw Clockwork Orange at some point and wished it had Daleks in it.

That said, I've read none of the fan reference books. I'd take issue with the dissing of Afterlife, which felt to me like it had just the right kind of expansion of ideas that a book based on the series should (though I always felt having Tarrant survive seemed like a stretch).

A lot of Doctor Who fans (myself included) had a false memory that after the crew force Uvanov to stand down the mine he turns round and says "satisfied?" (just after he says close scoops, stand down etc..) when in fact he never said it at all, it's in the Target novelisation. There was a lot of talk that Robots of Death had that part edited out at some point. I think the whole thing was cleared up by Mark "Kettle" Ayres when like a true geek he brought out his own off air recording.
